BossLady and Little Bear…doing what’s best in spite of the meant to be…
I met my dog on Sunday. Long before that, it had been love at first sight. With every fibre of my being, I knew as soon as I saw her (just like I did with Boss Kitty Polly Prissy Pants) that Little Bear was MY dog. I also know that I’m not in a place where I could provide her with the lifestyle she deserves. She is being fostered by Polly’s foster family and I had several invitations to come meet her but I was afraid my heart would break if I did because I knew I couldn’t take her with me.
There are two families in line now with applications to adopt her so I finally broke down and went to visit her on Sunday. As expected, she immediately filled up all the space left in my heart. She loved the little toy I brought and was generous with her cuddles and kisses and also perfectly independent…heading off for a snooze every ten mins or so on her own. She is essentially the perfect dog for me but, at the same time, I know I’m not perfect for her.
I’m not home enough… and I’m on my own. That big little girl is going to need a whole lot of space and more time than I can give her. It wouldn’t be fair to her and it would be selfish of me to adopt her knowing this so…instead of ignoring all of the inconvenient truths. I gave her a final cuddle and passed her back to her foster mama to wait for her forever family… a great home where she’ll have everything she needs and more.
I wasn’t kidding when I said it was love…and, to friends who exclaim, “but how could you leave her there?!” I say this… When you love someone, you want what’s best for them far more than to satisfy your own heart’s desire.
Love you Little Bear, I know your foster mama will ensure you live where you’ll have your best life …I know because she loves you just as much. <3
P.S. If you have room in your LIFE as well as your heart for a love like Little Bear…there are more like her in need of forever families available for adoption at Manitoba All Shepherd Rescue (and others, not like her, that also could complete your family at many other rescues in Manitoba. #AdoptDontShop)
