Hundreds hit the streets today for Winnipeg’s second Homeless Census !
Most of us think it’s normal to go Home, but for hundreds here that’s a different story. Beginning today a 24 hour street census will collect data on what’s believed to be the largest number of people experiencing homelessness ever recorded.
300 volunteers will fan out to gather information about the extent and nature of this phenomenon in Winnipeg. Census takers will visit emergency shelters, soup kitchens, churches, drop-in centers, bottle depots, breakfast programs and transitional housing. Two years ago 1700 were counted as homeless and the reasons were many; family conflict, death of a loved one, substance abuse, gambling, employment related or financial difficulties. How many more will street volunteers discover today? Regardless of the numbers we should also remember what it states on the buttons worn by the census takers. We Matter- We Count!
