Imagine it’s an Emergency and you Can’t communicate !
It’s called the Emergency Card Project. Inclusion Winnipeg and the Canadian Centre on Disability Studies are developing a critical tool for people with a disability who may have challenges communicating when in distress. Winnipeg First Responders have often been faced with this scenario during an emergency. What to do? The Emergency Card would offer them vital information such as their name so they may be addressed in a calming and familiar way ; Contact information for family or caregiver; A description of their anxiety triggers and strategies to reduce them as well as any other pertinent and necessary information which may help.
INCLUSION Winnipeg is asking us to support them to develop this further , provide critical training for first responders and families and seeing that Emergency Cards get into hands of those unable to speak for themselves. Please visit www.inclusionwinnipeg.org/donate/ It will help enhance the lives of people living with an intellectual disability, proving they and their families are valued equally to participate in all aspects of society.
