NOT YET Manitoba! Daylight Savings Time not abolished…not yet anyway…
This private member’s bill is making the rounds on social media again being shared as fact that it’s a done deal and it’s not.
Bill 205, also known as The Official Time Amendment Act, is a bill that has been put forward in Manitoba legislature by Emerson MLA, Cliff Graydon, proposing an end to Daylight Saving Time (DST) across the province.
As with all legislative business the bill was posted to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba website and, once online, immediately swept across social media being presented as a foregone conclusion.
In fact, the bill has yet to make it through its first reading in the Manitoba legislature. When it does, it won’t stand much of a chance.
A couple of months ago, Conservative MLA for Riding Mountain, Greg Nesbitt declared that his government would not be supporting the bill when it comes up for debate this spring and this is why:
“Daylight Saving Time is used throughout North America, including most of Canada and the United States.
Manitoba’s clocks are synchronized with the central time zone of the United States to ensure consistency with border crossings, airline flights, and the efficient flow of trade and communications with our largest trading partner.
The government is not currently considering changes to Daylight Saving Time in Manitoba.” (View his full statement below)
